1. Run management accounts

In the age of online banking and spreadsheets and accounting software there is no excuse for not knowing on a Friday evening how much money (and I mean real profit not how much you have in the bank) You made that week. I literally do mine off my phone and it takes me 15 minutes and I know exactly where I am financially.

Every business owner should do the same. Remember Cash in the bank does not = profit and profit does not always equal cash in the bank so get to know the truth!

2. Go through a list of all outstanding quotes and phone them

80% of lost sales are lost because no one asks for the order. Just pick up the phone and ask, you will be amazed how many more sales you make.

3. Review your work for next week and the week after

How much work do you have to do to make the profit you want; how much do you have to invoice? Have you booked enough in? If not get on it. Having a target and working to it will change your universe.

4. Phone all your staff for a 5-minute chat

Communication is key in every business and a quick hello, how are you (dare I say it the odd thankyou) Will go a long way to maximising staff performance and will also help you to catch ‘bad habits’ and nip them in the bud. Trust me it’s a really good investment of your time.

5. Go home on Time

There is nothing big and clever about working long hours, the more tired you are the less efficient you become. Go home turn of the laptop, switch the emails off on your phone and chill out. You will go back to work way more effective than you were before.

Oh, and one last thing (maybe a cheeky 6th!),

No one expects you to know everything about running a business so why expect that of yourself?

Speak to as many different people as you can and work on yourself as often as you can, be it reading, course’s or speaking to a coach or adviser.

That one piece of new knowledge could be the difference between success and failure.
