Fresh out of university (and with slightly more hair), dad put a stop to my rent-free lifestyle by landing me a job at the local fish merchants.
Being a fisherman himself, he knew the odorous graft of scrubbing fish boxes and gutting the latest catch would get my business cogs turning. And he was right. For the next ten years, I’d see a string of promotions on the docks, selling fish and employing staff, before eventually taking the leap to run my own business.
By 2005, I’d turned a local fish merchants into a multisite operation turning over £5.5 million a year.
Now, I’m not telling you this to impress you. In fact, it’s the complete opposite. In those ten years, my life was a fish-filled nightmare. I suffered all the anxieties of business you’re probably experiencing right now.
